Style File: Alicia Keys
As one of the queens of R and B and someone who is a strong advocate for natural beauty, we are talking about style evolution of the one and only Alicia Keys! Not only has she made some of the greatest R and B tunes of the 00’s, she’s also being rocking some serious style.
Taking it right back to 2001, Alicia hit the charts with Fallin’ which was an instant hit and still one of our jams here at Carmen HQ! In the video Alicia looked flawless with cornrows and a fresh faced natural make up look, a long leather coat, a slightly cropped tee and some flared bootleg jeans, which really set the trend for the early noughties.
In 2004 Alicia did a collab with one of the planet’s hottest artist, Usher *swoon*. In the Video for My Boo, she keeps those locks smooth, straight and sophisticated, completing the look with barely there heeled sandals, a silk pinky purple silk slip dress and a pinky purple coat to match, showing us that she can work any style!
Empire State of Mind hit the airwaves by force in 2009 which not only went down a storm but it also took Alicia’s look to another level with a natural, fierce ‘fro, leather jumpsuit and louboutins.
Alicia has always been on fierce female but it was Girl on Fire in 2012 that showed us she was all about girl power, with a cropped pixie cut and sharp cheek bones, Alicia shows us that she can work any look from an oriental style dress to a midi skirt and crop top.
Last year Alicia took natural beauty to a new level and took a stand against wearing make-up, proving to women everywhere that you don’t need to wear make-up to be beautiful. This no make-up movement has inspired women around the world and taught us all to embrace what we were born with – we salute you Alicia!
